Stumbling Stone

Friedrich Paul von Großheim

Born 27.04.1906  ‐  Died 06.01.2006  ‐ Age 99  ‐  (survived)

Early Years: Friedrich Paul Bonaventura von Groszheim was born on April 27, 1906, in Lübeck. His family belonged to the esteemed Lübeck patrician family. After the death of his parents, he was raised by aunts.

Career and Homosexuality: After training as a wholesale merchant, von Groszheim lived in Lübeck. In the liberal 1920s, he openly expressed his homosexuality and was part of the gay scene in Lübeck and Hamburg.

Persecution in the Nazi Era: Due to his homosexuality, von Groszheim became a target of Nazi persecution. In January 1937, he was arrested as part of a larger action against homosexuals in Lübeck. He was imprisoned multiple times, tortured, and ultimately sentenced to prison for violating § 175. Under pressure from the Gestapo, von Groszheim "voluntarily" underwent castration in 1938. Nevertheless, he was conscripted for military service. During World War II, he was arrested multiple times, including for alleged "monarchist activities."

Postwar Period: After being liberated by British troops, von Groszheim became involved with the Antifa. He later moved to Hamburg and worked as a porter at the "Reichshof" hotel until his retirement in 1972. He identified himself as one of the first victims of Nazi persecution of homosexuals and became an important witness to this injustice. His imprisonment in the Neuengamme camp was not recognized as grounds for compensation.

Death: Friedrich Paul von Groszheim passed away on January 6, 2006, in Hamburg, at almost 100 years old.
